The View spent their opening Thursday segment debating whether it was okay to mock Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for reportedly wearing heel lifts in his boots.
Former President Donald Trump and his supporters have mocked DeSantis throughout the primary for his choice in footwear, specifically the cowboy boots he’s been sporting lately with a heel — and allegedly with heel lifts inside. The daytime show played a clip of DeSantis where he defended wearing his unique style of boots, claiming he wears tennis shoes when he works out.
Co-host Ana Navarro relished in the mockery of DeSantis, adding that it could have helped him to get advice from drag queens in Florida.
“Call me petty. I know you will. That’s never stopped me before. I am relishing and enjoying this story so much because, honestly, he has been terrorizing my drag queen friends in Florida well over a year,” Navarro said. “It’s too bad he has no drag queen friends because maybe they would have taught him how to walk in heels.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin concurred but pointed towards DeSantis’ “lack of charisma” for why he will never be president, claiming he should have turned the criticism into a joke to avoid the humiliation.
“The reason he’s never going to be president is not the fact that he’s likely wearing high heels. It’s the answer to that clip. If someone accuses a man or anyone of wearing high heels and lying about it on shoes, make a joke, have some charisma,” she claimed. “Like it was the weirdest response. The lack of charisma is astounding.”
However, Sara Haines took a different view, advising her fellow panelists that they should not be endorsing body shaming tactics against DeSantis like Trump has done to belittle his opponents.
“Donald Trump is a bully and this is how he talks. Little Marco, Mini Mike, pencil neck, sleepy eyes, horse face,” she told her panelists. “It’s always commenting on everyone’s looks. There is plenty to pick apart about Ron DeSantis that I don’t feel it’s the right tone to just pick on his height.”
She continued, “We talk about body positivity around here all the time and women and not commenting on bodies and why do we just talk about size? Short men aren’t always confident.”
