  • What Is The Best Height For A Hunting Boot?

Your success as a hunter often hinges on the smallest details. If your hunting pack makes a sound in the brush or your knife lacks an edge, there’s a good chance you’ll return from a hunt feeling disheartened. These specialized boots are a vital part of any hunter’s gear, and the best hunting boots get you one step closer to success in the wild.

LaCrosse Ursa MS

Weight per pair: 3.1 pounds | Cuff height: 7 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: Brown/gold, Gunmetal/orange

The new LaCrosse Ursa MS is as a great all-around mid-season hunting boot. According to LaCrosse, it took five years to create this boot and it’s been dubbed the most stable, elite, lace-up leather boot on the market. It’ll stand the test of time thanks to the TecTuff PU-infused leather, which is abrasion-resistant and quick-drying. The breathable SuperFabric material around the midfoot pairs with a large Hexguard to set this boot apart from the crowd. It feature a Gore-Tex breathable liner and a steadfast Vibram Mont outsole to keep you upright. It excels when hauling a heavy load in the harshest conditions and performs in any terrain—LaCrosse put the design to the test with elite teams in Nevada, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Utah, so you know it’s ready for just about anything.

Weight per pair: 4.3 pounds | Cuff height: 16 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: Camo

TideWe’s budget-friendly hunting boots cost about as much as a capable hunting knife, and while that may sound a tad bit concerning, you can put your worries aside—this is actually a great boot for the money.

Available with or without 400-gram insulation, the boot features six millimeters of neoprene rubber to keep water out and warmth in, and the stretchy nylon shell about the leg eliminates unwanted stiffness or a painful break-in period. The boot’s added toe and heel protection prevents rocks and roots from interrupting your adventures, and the rubber outsole offers solid traction, even in the muck. While the brand’s 30-day return policy isn’t the strongest we’ve seen, hundreds of five-star reviews cite the boot’s solid construction and immediate comfort that makes every mile a little easier.

Under Armour

Under Armour UA Hovr Dawn

Weight per pair: 1.06 pounds | Cuff height: 6 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: UA Forest AS Camo/Maverick Brown/Bayou, Fog/Honey Orange/Black, Ridge Reaper Camo Barren/Bayou/Khaki Base

Under Armour made a name for itself in the sports world with a roster of best-selling performance apparel, but the Baltimore brand is using that same technology and athletic influence to design other equipment, including hunting boots.

The UA Hovr Dawn boots are incredibly lightweight and comfortable like a traditional Under Armour athletic shoe, but they have the added benefit of being completely waterproof. Under Armour’s signature UA HOVR cushioning (the same forgiving material found in its running shoes) can be found in the Dawn as a means of lessening impact and facilitating energy return. Despite being waterproof, the boot is still breathable, making it more comfortable on long hikes, and it pairs all that comfort and support with a lugged outsole that maintains grip in even the worst conditions. If you’re in need of a boot that blends modern materials with a rough ‘n ready design, look no further.

Weight per pair: 3.13 pounds | Cuff Height: 8 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: 3D Camo

The Zamberlan Lynx Mid GTX hunting boot is made specifically for female hunters who require a boot that makes no compromises. It serves as an ideal early-season option that’s rugged and well-built.

It offers hunters eight inches of robust hydrobloc Italian nubuck leather through the upper, while a Vibram 3D outsole provides necessary traction. It has a forward rocker built in to help with downhill braking and the insoles offer solid comfort and footbed support. The ZBPK Performance Fit + ZLF (Zamberlan Ladies Fit) ensures this isn’t just a men’s boot made smaller for women—it was actually designed with a woman’s foot in mind. Handcrafted in Italy, it’s resoleable in the U.S. should you wish to keep it around for years to come.

Weight per pair: 2.75 pounds | Cuff height: 17 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: Mossy oak

Bogs are synonymous with mud, and when you need a boot to keep you warm and dry, the Blaze II waterproof hunting rain boot will do the job. The best rubber hunting boots are made from 53% rubber and 47% nylon jersey, so these design stretches to the mid-calf in an effort to keep any and all water at bay. The boot has a rubber sole and blaze orange lining for a pop of color. These boots also make use of 3 millimeters of 1000-gram Thinsulate insulation for additional warmth on cold hunts. Even though they’re rubber and insulated, they won’t leave your feet wet from sweat thanks to the Bogs signature Max-Wick technology that’s meant to keep feet dry while on the move. The Blaze II also has a non-slip deep lug outsole for solid traction in slippery terrain.

Zamberlan 3031 Polar Hunter GTX

Weight per pair: 3.92 pounds | Cuff height: 11 inches | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: Black/Orange

The new Zamberlan 3031 Polar Hunter GTX insulated hunting boot is built for the coldest, harshest environments. If you’re hunting in extreme weather, this is the boot you want on your feet.

These Zamberlans keep feet warm and dry, even in sub-freezing conditions. The ZWL Wide last offers solid stability, and there’s extra room inside the boot for a second pair of socks. But it’s the integrated Kevlar gaiter that really makes this cold-weather boot stand apart, and it utilizes a BOA dial to lock the boot against your foot and seal in heat. A nylon collar at the top of the boot ensures no snow or ice will come over the top, and Zamberlan pairs Gore-Tex waterproofing with Riri zippers on the front that make the boot completely waterproof and easy to get on and off. A rubber rand protects the boot’s exterior about the base and thermal footbeds include four-millimeter flex insoles with extra insulation, making this the best cold-weather hunting boot on the market.

Vasque

Vasque Torre AT GTX 7554

Weight per pair: 2.4 pounds | Cuff Height: Mid | Waterproof: Yes | Colors: Dark olive, Gargoyle, Midnight navy

Making one of the best waterproof hunting boots you can buy, Vasque’s new Torre AT GTX 7554 is designed to tackle any and all unwanted moisture. As one of the best upland hunting boots, it’s designed for overland approaches in all types of conditions.

The boot is built with a Vibram Wavelength II sole and LiteBase technology for extra grippy traction, and it sports a Gore-Tex membrane that prevents exterior moisture from getting in while allowing moisture or sweat in the boot to evaporate. Lightweight yet sturdy, consider these if you constantly find yourself dealing with wet feet or oversaturated boots.

Why Trust Forbes Vetted

To find the best hunting boots for this list, I spent ample time sourcing the best options from established industry labels. Upon rounding up a series of noteworthy picks, I looked at each boot’s features, from cuff height to waterproofing to insulation. After narrowing down my options to the top selections, I sorted through customer reviews and ratings, eliminating any boots with concerning or inconsistent reviews that cited cold feet, discomfort or poor build quality. I also tested a handful of these boots in Colorado to ensure they could meet the demands of long days in the backcountry.

When creating this finalized list, I made an effort to include boots that suit the needs of different hunters. For those who prefer to hunt in cold weather, I included boots like the Zamberlan 3031 Polar Hunter GTX, which features plenty of insulation and a secure fit. I also included models like the Bogs Blaze II for those who prefer purely rubber boots over fabric-based options.

How Should A Hunting Boot Fit?

A hunting boot should fit snugly about your foot but not too tight—it should provide support and comfort while allowing room for thick socks. A hunting boot should also have enough space for your toes to wiggle without feeling cramped, and your heel should not slip when walking. Additionally, consider the terrain and weather conditions for the appropriate boot type and insulation.

What Is The Best Height For A Hunting Boot?

The answer to this question often depends on the terrain you’ll encounter and your preferred hunting style. However, you’ll generally want a boot with a mid- to high-cuff as this offers the most protection—something between an 8-inch and 10-inch cuff height should be perfect. Anything within this range will provide solid ankle protection and support while also keeping water, snow, dirt and debris out of the boot.
